Why PreCalculus?
Calculus As you can imagine, PreCalculus is intended to prepare you for "The Calculus". Calculus is the result of brilliant work by Isaak Newton and Gottfried von Leibniz several hundred years ago. Their work enabled us to explain, in clear mathematical language, the mathematics of change. But, to be able to understand, learn and express the work of these great mathematicians, we must first learn the fundamental concepts of PreCalculus. Think of Calculus as the bicycle and PreCalculus as the tricycle. You really need to do one before the other. Having said that, students typically find PreCalculus a more difficult course of study than Calculus.
About this course...
This course follows the WNCP curriculum for PreCalculus. Many varied topics are explored, most of which are intended to prepare you for the study of Calculus. Topics include:
  • Transformations of Functions
  • Polynomial, Rational & Radical Functions
  • Circular Geometry & Trigonometry
  • Exponentials & Logarithms
  • Combinatorics & The Binomial Theorem
As you can tell, the list of topics is quite varied (and challenging). As mentioned earlier, the course is intended to prepare for Calculus but actually, just as important, it is intended to prepare students entering the pure and applied sciences in post-secondary studies.
