2009: Prince Edward Island
A Big Loop
Distance: 850km
Map
Cycling the coast of PEI is something I would recommend to everyone. Not flat like the pairies, not mountainous like Oregon, PEI is gentle rolling hills with some of the most beautiful scenery in Canada.
The Trip
Flying into Charlottetown is amazing. The airport is so small, you know you're "getting away from it all" when you get here. Fortunately for us, we had the help of Glen Duizer (Ms D. Duizer's husband) who happened to be in Charlottetown at the time. This gave us a place to store our bike boxes.
The PEI coastal tour is always interesting. The terrain keeps changing, the scenery is always interesting, the people are very friendly.
The Geography
Rain for the first 5 days. Drenching rain. Our first two trips spoiled us. But now, cycling in the rain is just as enjoyable as in the sunshine. Highs into the 20s (C) and lows around 10.
Rolling hills. Roads are clean and in good shape. Very little traffic on the coastal roads. Drivers are very accommodating to cyclists.
Oddity
Ask an Islander "How far is it to _______?". They're answer is either "It's a piece." or "Just 15 minutes.". There are relatively few distance markers and Islanders don't often measure distance in kilometers but rather in minutes or other vague terms like "a piece".
Rating: 10
This is a great "scenic" trip. No downsides.
