2012: Vancouver → Calgary

Through the Rockies
Distance: 1100km Map

This trip is not for the unmotivated. With numerous category 2,3,4 climbs as well as a couple category 1 climbs (according to CycleRoute, one is definitely challenged.
The Trip
So, in an effort to challenge fitness, we decided to take on the task of cycling the Rockies. I also used a BOB trailer on this trip to help with the gear. On this trip we opted for a mix of cheap motels and camping. The air conditioning in a few key locations was helpful, particular that summer where we ended long climbing days in 35+C temperatures with no cloud cover.
The Geography
Wonderful sunshine with no rainy days. Highs into the mid 30s (C) and lows around 15.

Serious hills/mountains. Roads are clean and generally in good shape. Drivers were mostly accommodating to cyclists (but you get the occasional blast from (guess) - a pickup).
Of Interest
There are quite a few people who cycle this trip. We met several small groups making the same trip as we were. One of these conversation resulted in an invite to cycle New Zealand. That will wait for retirement.
Rating: 10
As mentioned, this is not an easy "holiday" but as a cycling trip, it is rated highly simply for the pleasure of the challenge. Uphills are more thrilling than downhills for two reasons: 1) the satisfaction of making it to the top, 2) you don't fear a blown tire as you do when flying downhill at top speed.
